Impediments In NERIS
NERIS asks what got in the way in two places: a written narrative on every incident, and a short list on each rescue.
Every incident
The impediment narrative
Anything that got in the way of the incident, written in your own words. A blocked hydrant, a locked gate, a delayed second due. It sits next to the outcome narrative, which says what happened and how it ended.

Rescue impediments
When firefighters rescue someone or help them evacuate, NERIS asks whether conditions made the rescue harder. More than one can apply, and None is a value too. It is asked for civilians and for firefighters, in separate fields.

More NERIS code lists
From the incident and rescue definitions and value lists NERIS publishes in its core data schema (neris-framework, version 60c2941). If this page and NERIS ever disagree, NERIS is right and we want to know. The official reference is the NERIS data dictionary.
