Fire department

State FIPS code

The department itself

  • The middle two digits are the state's federal FIPS code, so every New Jersey department starts FD34 and every Texas department starts FD48.
  • This is a pattern we measured across the published directory, not a documented rule, and it is not universal: seven District of Columbia departments and all eleven Armed Forces departments carry 51, Virginia's code. Read your ID off the directory rather than constructing one.
  • The ID is the department, not the incident. It stays the same for the life of the department and appears on everything it files.

Where this comes from

This is a copy of the NERIS public fire department directory, taken August 31, 2026. It is published by NERIS, not by us, and it lists every registered department whether or not it has anything to do with FireMic. We reformatted it and added search; we did not add, remove, or estimate a single department.

A department that registered recently may not be in this snapshot yet. If yours is missing, search by city or ZIP first in case it is registered under its legal name, then ask the NERIS help desk at NERIS.Helpdesk@UL.org. We cannot add, edit, or remove a department in NERIS.
