NERIS login
If you are looking for the NERIS sign-in page, it is here. The rest of this page is for when signing in does not work.
The official sign-in page
NERIS is run by the U.S. Fire Administration with the Fire Safety Research Institute. That page is theirs. FireMic is not affiliated with them, and we cannot see, reset, or restore your NERIS account.
Why it emails you a code every time
NERIS uses multi-factor authentication, so each sign-in needs a time-limited code sent to your email. This is normal and is not a sign that anything is wrong with your account. It does mean that whoever controls your department's email effectively controls NERIS access, which is worth knowing when a member leaves.
When you cannot get in
Four things go wrong, and they have different fixes. Working out which one you have saves the most time.
The access code never arrives
NERIS uses multi-factor authentication and emails a time-limited code at each sign-in. Florida's State Fire Marshal has published that some email platforms delay these codes past their expiry. If that is happening, request a fresh code and watch for it immediately, check junk and quarantine folders, and ask whoever runs your mail to allow NERIS's sender. If codes keep expiring in transit, that is a mail-delivery problem to raise with the help desk, not a password problem.
You never received credentials at all
Initial credentials go to the department contact NERIS has on file, not to everyone. Illinois, for example, told departments their designated contact would receive two emails around their onboarding date: one adding them to the department, one carrying temporary credentials. If nobody at your department got those, the contact on file is likely wrong or stale. Your state fire marshal is the fastest route to fixing that.
You are new and nobody has added you
NERIS accounts are created inside a department by someone who already has admin access there. There is no public self-signup that puts you into an existing department. If your chief or department admin has not added you, no amount of retrying the login page will help.
Your department is not in NERIS yet
Registration is a separate step from logging in, and it is done by the department, not by a vendor. If your department was never registered, there is no account to sign in to.
Who to contact
In rough order of how quickly they can help with an access problem:
- Your own department's NERIS admin. Adding members and fixing roles happens inside your department. Most access problems stop here.
- Your state fire marshal's office. They hold the department contact list your state was onboarded from, and several publish a dedicated NERIS help line.
- The NERIS help desk, NERIS.Helpdesk@UL.org. For anything the first two cannot resolve.
Not us. We have no visibility into your NERIS account and no ability to act on it, and we would rather say so than take a support email we cannot answer.
Signing in is not the same as authorizing software
These get confused constantly. Signing in is you, personally, opening the NERIS portal. Authorizing software is your department granting a specific application permission to file on its behalf through the NERIS API, done once by a department admin.
You do not need to be signed in to NERIS to use software that files into it, and authorizing an application does not give that application your password. If you are trying to connect FireMic, the steps are on our enrollment walkthrough; the same idea applies to any vendor.
